Like the crowds we want Jesus to meet our needs, hopes and expectations. Like the Romans we don’t want him disturbing our good order and well worked out systems. Like the Sadducees we’d prefer he didn’t call us out of our comfortable situation and like the Pharisees we would prefer Jesus didn’t challenge our authority, and tradition, and comfortable religion. We would prefer he didn’t tell us that we are sinners in need of mercy and repentance. To sum up: we want to be our own kings.
