I remember Mike Willisee as being someone who was pretty negative and cynical about people of faith. I was very surprised therefor when I saw an interview with him on Andrew Denton's Enough Rope. In that interview it transpired that he had converted to Christianity. Moreover he had made the same discovery that the Diciples had made at the end of John 6. He had been discovered by God. For him the words of Peter rang true, "Lord where could we go, you have the words of eternal life" . In that interview with Denton he said " you can't get faith rationally. You can't read the right books and think it through and say, "Therefore there is God and he's a God of love and mercy, therefore I will love him in return." That's it. It doesn't happen like that. Faith is a gift.... My conversion was a gift..."

Questions for thought or discussion

What brought you to faith? What part did reasoning play? What part did inner conviction or calling play? What part if any did the words of Jesus or other parts of the Bible play? How might your experience of these things relate to the experience of others? How do you react to Peter's statement to Jesus, "You have the words of eternal life"?
