“Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (John 20:21–22, NRSV)
The Spirit brings peace. So far this week we’ve thought about how the Spirit creates and renews (Monday), the Spirit Unites (Tuesday), the Spirit Inspires (Wednesday), the Spirit speaks the language of our heart (Thursday), the Spirit gives gifts (Friday) and today the Spirit brings Peace.
In John 14 Jesus says that the Spirit will come so that the Disciples will remember him and his word, and so they will not be left alone, as orphans. By the Spirit Jesus will still be with them. In John 20:21-22 the presence of the Risen Jesus with the disciples brings peace and joy. He breaths the Spirit upon them. This is the way we experience the presence of Jesus, through the Spirit, God’s love poured into our hearts. (Romans 5:5).
Many, many times in my ministry I have heard people tell of the peace of God coming to them in times of trouble or grief, this is the work of the Spirit bringing the peace of Jesus.
God we thank you for the peace you have brought in many times of trouble, and the peace you bring us now. We ask for the Spirit to continue to bring the peace of Jesus to us and all those who need it. In the name of that same Jesus we pray. Amen.
