The cartoon above is a reminder that on this Sunday when we celebrate Christ the King we celebrate a very different sort of King. Jesus gave a total commitment to us in order that we might be reconciled to God. I believe that in Jesus God had truly come amongst us as one of us, a real human being. Part of being a real human being is being born. Another part is dying. For me there is a sense in which Jesus did not have to die on a cross, he could even have died of old age. His life would still have been a sacrifice. He would still have chosen to live, teach, heal, love, work and die for us. Jesus’ life was not about earthly power and glory, it was about bringing us into relationship with God. I believe that in Jesus God was not simply making a contribution to our lives, God was making a total commitment.
Questions for thought or discussion.
How do you feel about the idea that Jesus’ life was a sacrifice for us? Have you ever made a big sacrifice for your children or those who you love? If so, what led you to do it? What might lead God, or anyone else to make a total commitment to another?
